With the water off, dry the area thoroughly. Then turn the supply back on briefly and watch carefully. Water appearing at the base of the faucet where it meets the sink often points to a failed seal or O-ring under the handle or spout. Drips from the spout when the faucet is off usually mean an internal washer, cartridge, or seat problem. Water collecting lower in the cabinet, around the supply lines or drain, indicates a different set of issues—loose connections, failed supply tubes, or a leaking drain assembly.

Some situations call for professional help or a full faucet replacement. If the shutoff valves under the sink will not close, if corrosion has damaged the valve body, or if the faucet body itself is cracked, continuing to repair individual parts may not be worthwhile. Likewise, if the leak involves the sink drain or the connection to the house plumbing in a way that is difficult to access, a plumber can often resolve it faster and with less risk of collateral damage.

Water that reappears after a careful repair sometimes points to a secondary issue, such as higher-than-expected water pressure or a partially blocked aerator that puts extra stress on the seals. Checking the aerator screen and confirming that the supply valves are fully open after reassembly are small steps that prevent repeat problems.

Checking under sinks a couple of times a year for early signs of moisture, making sure supply lines remain flexible and free of corrosion, and operating the shutoff valves occasionally so they do not seize all reduce the chance of sudden failures.
